Your Children's Online Inheritance

23 Jan in Technology

It is probably not something you think too much about but one day your now young or perhaps even unborn children will more than likely have access to every single thing you have ever posted online. A complete digital archive of your best and worst behavior.

Simply imagine if your own parents had grown up with a digital Facebook or Twitter trail. Every drunken party, every hateful tirade, every immature quip, every relationship status, there for your enjoyment but probably embarrassment and disgust.

Whether through unfortunate death, accidental log-in, Facebook/twitter privacy goof, hack, data released from hacking or any number of other reasons, your entire digital life at the finger tips of your kids.

Sure, as we get older we realize that parents aren't and weren't perfect and weren't perhaps saints but there's always been, throughout all of human history, a healthy barrier between us and all our parents' 'pre-us' lives and probably, most importantly, the trials tribulations of parenting and personal relationships.

Yes, when (not if) that moment happens, when the treasure trove of your social media history is swung open, your child will have a choice to either 'respect' that barrier or succumb to curiosity.

Regardless, it's probably in you and your childrens' interests to at least attempt to leave a respectable and digital legacy.
